Nabbit was created for NSMBU in 2012. By the time the original MK8 came out, he was only two years old. But then again, Rosalina was one when MKWii came out and Toadette was made for MKDD.

I think this is exactly it. They needed someone or something to pose a filler character (surprisingly, they didn;t use a koopaling).

I think nabbit is super cute so it doesn’t bother me too much. Although I’m still shocked they got rid of Diddy Kong
