Is Super Mario Kart Forgotten?

I know on this site this is one of the first threads about the game, but across several platforms and forums I see the same thing: SMK is forgotten, with many only regarding Mario Kart 64 as the original of the series. Why is this?

I think the limitations of the SNES caused the issue. It was overly ambitious for the hardware it was made on
